Scott Iwasaki’s review from Sundance 2010:

http://www.deseretnews.com/blog/23/10008191/Blog-Sundance-Fest-digest-AM–the-ASCAP-Music-Cafe.html

So the end of this year’s Sundance Film Festival ultimately means the end of the ASCAP Music Cafe.

There were some great artists who performed this year – K.S. Rhoades, Brendan Benson, Sass Jordan, LeAnn Rimes and the Fray.

One of the coolest sets I’ve seen at the ASCAP was by New Orleans-raised singer/songwriter AM.

Not only is AM a performer, but he has also written film music. And while he didn’t attend Sundance last year, his music was featured in one of the films that made its premiere back then — Ashton Kutcher’s “Spread.”

He also c0-scored Chris Lusvardi’s “Man Maid,” with Tom Hiel which will be released February 1, on Warner Bros. Home Video.

On Friday, Jan. 30, AM, who now lives in Los Angeles, took the stage for the second day in a row. And, to the audience’s delight, treated them with some awesome tales of life and it’s ups and downs.

I caught up with AM after his last show, which wrapped up his first appearance at the Sundance Film Festival.

“It’s great,” AM said about his ASCAP Music Cafe experience. “All the music is diverse but equally as good. It’s casual, but professional. and (the producers) get behind musicians and artists.”

AM said not only did he make connections with audience members from around the world, but he also made some industry connections as well.

“I’ve met some great people and got to chat with a few directors,” he said. “I also met some great musicians and some great bands.

“This is the perfect marriage, music and film, these are my people,” he said.

The singer/songwriter said his Sundance gigs was one more opportunity that helps him live his dream.

“This is all I ever wanted to do — travel the world and play music for people,’ he said. “I’ve always wanted to make records and reach new people with the music.”

Looking forward, AM said he’s gearing up to go on tour with French electronic duo AIR for a tour in support of his new CD “Future Sons & Daughters,” which will be released Feb. 9.

“We’re going to stay on the road as long as we can and do some festivals and release the record out in the UK,” he said.

Upon returning home, if there isn’t another tour waiting, AM said he will write more music.

“When I’m not on the road, I’m writing songs for myself and writing music for films,” he said. “Los Angeles is full of amazing people to collaborate with.”

AM was the last show to see at the ASCAP Music Cafe this year, and I’m already looking forward to who will take the stage next year.

Haiti Needs Your Help

With your help, CDBaby hopes to raise at least $10,000 in two weeks time to help Haiti.

CD Baby will donate $1 for every one of my CD’s sold between Jan. 25 and Feb. 1, 2010. $1.  The money will go directly to the American Red Cross and to Mercy Corps, a portland-based relief organization with a large presence in Haiti.

It is just a small way to help with money you might have already planned on spending on some new music.  Half the population of Haiti is below 18 years old.   Nearly 43 percent of the population is 14 or younger and they need our money to rebuild Haiti. Kids. They need our help.

AM’s Tasty Grooves Mixtape- Submit your question

AM’s Tasty Grooves Mixtape

Week 1 Mixtape

Question:

“You got to meet your most idolized musician, who would it be,” -Jason From Indiana

Answer:

JORGE BEN

1. Ponta de Lanca Africano

2. Mas Que Nada

3. Take It Easy My Brother Charles

About the Artist

Brazilian musical artist, Jorge Ben, got his first big shine from the composition of track number 2 “Mas Que Nada” at age 23 (decade of the groovy sixties). At the time of his most influential work, musica popular brasileria was more about challenging Brazil’s political authorities and singing of reform. Jorge Ben, however, didn’t allow the frustration of political supremacy overshadow his musical talent. Using his bossa nova guitar skills, Ben created a style of music that dashed a touch of the African West Coast to a seductive Brazilian groove.

AM TAKES FLIGHT WITH AIR ON NORTH AMERICAN TOUR;  WARMS UP IN PARK CITY, UTAH WITH SEVERAL SUNDANCE GIGS

LOS ANGELES— AM has been invited by French electro-pop kings Air to open their first North American tour in three years. Kicking off March 13 in Miami, the jaunt will serve as the perfect launching pad for AM’s new album, Future Sons & Daughters, produced by Charles Newman (The Magnetic Fields) and due for release on February 9 at record stores across the U.S. on Filter U.S. Recordings. The run will end with a concert at the illustrious Walt Disney Concert Hall in L.A. which sold out in the first 30 minutes tickets went on sale.

The imminent new year will start with a few shows at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, where AM will perform at the Sundance ASCAP Music Café, Friday, January 28 and Saturday, January 29. No stranger to the film world, AM’s music, which possesses an undeniable cinematic quality, has been featured in more than 80 movies and television shows, including two films that premiered at Sundance last year, including the biggest acquisition of 2009’s Fest, Ashton Kutcher’s “Spread.” Now, AM has added film scoring to his impressive resume, co-composing his first motion picture, “Man Maid” (Warner Bros.) alongside established composer Tom Hiel (The Practice, Swimming With Sharks).

As a Tulsa-born, New Orleans raised artist with a flare for distilling global musical influences into his own unique and infectious pop confections, AM’s genre-blurring music, while hard to classify, goes down as smooth as a Mai Tai on a tropical island. Or as Creative Loafing succinctly put it, “AM has an uncanny knack for crafting pop songs shaken and stirred with Philly R&B, Motown soul, ’60s rock and folk, and Brazilian rhythms that get in your head and swirl around for a spell.”

Expect to hear AM’s music in the fourth season, second episode of NBC’s hit television show “Friday Night Lights” starting in January 2010.
