Caetano Veloso will open the award-winning Greek Theatre’s 2010 season on Thursday, April 15 with AM opening.

Caetano Veloso is among the most influential and beloved artists to emerge from Brazil. Known there since the 1960’s, Veloso has made more than thirty recordings to date and has developed a strong international following. Born in Santo Amaro, Bahia, in 1942, Caetano Veloso began his professional musical career in 1965 in Sao Paulo. In his first compositions he drew on the bossa novas of Joao Gilberto, but rapidly began to develop his own distinctive style. Absorbing musical and aesthetic ideas from sources as diverse as The Beatles, concrete poetry, the French Dadaists and the Brazilian modernist poets of the 1920s, Caetano, together with Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, his sister Maria Bethania, and a number of other poets and intellectuals, founded a movement called Tropicalismo. By experimenting with new sounds and words, adding electric guitars to their bands and utilizing the imagery of modern poetry, Caetano became a musical revolutionary.

Although Tropicalismo set the tone for Caetano’s career, his music has evolved greatly over the years. Incorporating elements of rock, reggae, fado, tango, samba canao, baiao and rap– with lyrics containing some of the best poetry in a musical tradition rich in verse– Caetano’s music is sometimes traditional, sometimes contemporary, often hybrid. At once an astute social commentator and balladeer of highly emotive love songs, Caetano is one of the most respected poets in the Portuguese language. Indeed he is one of only a handful of artists who has resolved how to be musically modern and still undeniably Brazilian.

Human instincts for survival and self preservation run deep. AM wrote this song during the worst financial depression America has ever seen.

On the day of the music video shoot, AM and the band got word that Michael Jackson had passed away and they all felt the irony of shooting a video the day that the “king of videos” has died.

AM said, “With such a heavy subject matter we wanted the video to have a playful element to it. We decided to have the whole band playing “live” and juxtapose the performance against some old archival footage…. educational, government and union propaganda films from the 1950’s.”

“Self Preservation” is from AM’s new album Future Sons & Daughters produced by Charles Newman. Newman was simultaneously producing AM’s album and also The Magnetic Fields’ new album “Realism” in Los Angeles and NYC last year.

Morning Becomes Eclectic producer Ariana Morgenstern

It’s a great pleasure to have AM back on our show today.  In around 2006, we began playing this local artist’s work, which at the time was ensconced in the confessional singer/songwriter style sound you hear at the Hotel Cafe. We have been impressed by his musical growth as he delves into Brazilian music,  Italian soundtracks, and even a little Turkish psychedlia. Even though this new recording is inspired by the global sounds of the 60’s and 70’s, the man is clearly grounded in pop, which is the foundation for it all. He’s about to tour with the French band Air and will be back in town later this month for what promises to be a memorable sold out show at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Lucky for us, he’ll cap the end of the tour with his own performance at Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach on March 30.
