I came across this singer/songwriter the other day in my e-mail: AM. While his name makes him harder to find when doing a Google search, I’ve found that he’s an interesting singer with a sound that I’m really enjoying. To me, he sounds somewhat like Cary Brothers and Chris Stills, two artists that I’ve really enjoyed recently.
This is one reason why I really like blogging about music - I can come up across artists who I’d probably not come across otherwise, and I get to help get their sound out a bit. AM’s sound is one that I can easily see being featured on TV shows, given the quality and style of the music that’s typically featured.
This album has a nice, laid back sound to it. There’s a good rhythm to all of the songs, and some very good guitarwork for a couple of them. Soul Variations is this guy’s second album, with a smaller release this year called Side By Side: Duets, Vol 1, with some interesting pairups, including Meiko and Tina Dico.

“Hear Me Sing” the duet by AM and Buddy from AM’s duets album, Side By Side, is in the feature film WAKE directed by Ellie Kanner. Starring Bijou Phillips, Danny Masterson (from the hit tv show “That 70’s Show”) and Jane Seymore.

AM will be performing at Make Music Pasadena on June 21st. Catch him on the Emerging Artists Stage: One Colorado Courtyard at 6:00pm.

For an artist whose career is just beginning its upward trajectory, singer-songwriter AM already has the whole myth-making thing down. He doesn’t like revealing exact dates about certain events in his life, and don’t even bother inquiring about his government name — he is not about to give it up. What we do know is that he was born in Tulsa, Okla., grew up a self-described “rock’n'roll kid,” was working in a music store and playing bar gigs with cover bands by the time he was 15, was influenced to become a songwriter by the likes of Bob Dylan, Beck and Jeff Tweedy, left New Orleans for Los Angeles and fell in with the Hotel Café scene, released his first album, Troubled Times, in 2006, and with its spare, mostly acoustic arrangements and simple-but-cryptic lyrics, caught a buzz in the L.A. neo-folk community, which carried over to his second album, last year’s Soul Variations. Oh, and one other thing: He is playing Zoey’s on May 30.
