1. One of many groovy Morricone comps…but keyword here is “acid.”

2. The introductory record into “awesome soundtracks…ok films.”

3. One of Morricone’s “understudies”.

1. Breezy Surf-Psych.

2. One of Jorge’s meanest and dirtiest sounding records. Can’t get enough.

3. A favorite of mine for many years.

1. So bad ass. Carol Kaye plays bass on these tracks. My bass player Mark Getten is now taking lessons from Carol. So surreal.

2. Another LA artist and someone I’ve had the privilege to hang with a time or three.

3. A great compilation I picked up in Seattle while on tour a couple of years ago. I wish I could remember the name of the place as the guy who owned the joint was super cool and turned me on to a few nuggets.

Some other guitars used on “FS&D”…namely the vintage burst 1960′s Silvertone in front (courtesy of Steven Stern). That guitar was used on several tunes…namely the electric guitar parts in “Darker Days”.

I used this 1966 Gibson ES 330 (on lend from friend Seven Stern) on a few tracks on “FS&D”. I believe this was taken during the recording of “When the Dust Settles”…the haunting, twangy part in the chorus. Run this through the Silvertone 1485 and the Fender Reverb and you’re in bizness.

An original 60′s Fender Reverb through a Sears Silvertone 1485. Pure and raw.

For an artist whose career is just beginning its upward trajectory, singer-songwriter AM already has the whole myth-making thing down. He doesn’t like revealing exact dates about certain events in his life, and don’t even bother inquiring about his government name — he is not about to give it up. What we do know is that he was born in Tulsa, Okla., grew up a self-described “rock’n'roll kid,” was working in a music store and playing bar gigs with cover bands by the time he was 15, was influenced to become a songwriter by the likes of Bob Dylan, Beck and Jeff Tweedy, left New Orleans for Los Angeles and fell in with the Hotel Café scene, released his first album, Troubled Times, in 2006, and with its spare, mostly acoustic arrangements and simple-but-cryptic lyrics, caught a buzz in the L.A. neo-folk community, which carried over to his second album, last year’s Soul Variations. Oh, and one other thing: He is playing Zoey’s on May 30.
